In boyhood, Louis Zamperini was an incorrigible delinquent. As a teenager, he channeled his defiance into running, discovering a prodigious talent that had carried him to the Berlin Olympics. But when World War II began, the athlete became an airman, embarking on a journey that led to a doomed flight on a May afternoon in 1943. When his Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean, against all odds, Zamperini survived, adrift on a foundering life raft. Ahead of Zamperini lay thousands of miles of open ocean, leaping sharks, thirst and starvation, enemy aircraft, and, beyond, a trial even greater. Driven to the limits of endurance, Zamperini would answer desperation with ingenuity; suffering with hope, resolve, and humor; brutality with rebellion. His fate, whether triumph or tragedy, would be suspended on the fraying wire of his will.

Last weekend I finished Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand and my only disappointment was that I did not read this sooner! I mentioned a few weeks back that seeing the Olympics preview of this movie with Angelina Jolie is what made me pick this book up and now? I cannot wait for the movie!
You know what I think? I think that if High School students were required to read this book along side learning about WWII it would make a much bigger impact….I know it would have with me. Reading about WWII in books is not the same as being immersed into it thru this book….. history came alive for me thru this book. The history books do not give us an accurate picture of what these guys actually went thru and Louis Zamperini’s story is unbelievable. The strength of this man is literally something I cannot comprehend. During this entire book all I could think about is “What if this was me”? I would have broken, been broken and would not have made it. Reading this book gave me an incredible appreciation for POW’s in a way that I just didn’t understand before. Every night I couldn’t wait to read this book and I was so sad when I finished………. if you have not read this, you should. If you have a High Schooler you should encourage them to read this as well.

THIS is the face of a Hero. The face of Inspiration. A heart of Gold.

I hate that I have to wait until Christmas for this movie to come out BUT I know what I will be seeing over the Christmas break….. that means you too family!
