Half the Sky

Women hold up half the sky….Chinese Proverb
Before I talk about this book I want you all to watch this “Book Trailer”…

This book was brought to my attention during an episode of Oprah that featured Nicholas Kristof and his wife who wrote this book together…I immediately downloaded this onto my kindle and dug in. I was barely 100 pages in when I realized I wanted the actual book so I could not only highlight passages but pass this book on to my friends so they too can be enlighten.
This book is hard to discuss but what I want you to know is that this book is so much more than a “feminist /women’s rights” book. Nicholas Kristof brought much to my attention and taught me so much more that I will forever be changed. I will try even harder to do good and to be thankful for what I am given. I want to share with you some startling statistics that I learned while reading this book….
– Every year over 2 Million women and girls will literally vanish due to gender discrimination such as sex trafficking, maternal death, honor killings and the list goes on.
– Do you know that in the last 50 years there have been more women and girls killed than all of the men who have been killed in every war during the twentieth century? Shocking…no one reports this.
– Currently there are over 3 million girls enslaved in the sex trade.
– Every single day the number of women who die in child birth is equivalent to 5 JUMBO JETS!!! While many more ares subject to still births, fistulas and then turn to suicide.

I learned much more but I am not here to give you a lesson in women’s history or women’s rights. This book is filled with horrific stories and eye opening stats….but when reading these I never felt like the stories told were so much graphic but immensely sad. The video below was shown on Oprah and I hope you take the 2min or so to watch it……

What can you do or I do?? Well my head is filled with ideas that I will share soon but a good start is reading this book and educating yourself about things that go on in the world. Sometimes it is so hard to get out of “our bubble” myself included and find the time away from our busy lives to think of others! This book was wonderful and should be mandatory reading for anyone who cares about the world. This book will have a special place in my heart and hopefully in yours soon!
Thank you for listening!

This looks awesome. I'll have to add it to my "to read" list. Sounds like the gist is similar to Three Cups of Tea…and I noticed Greg Mortenson was the first quote praising this book. Awesome!
