Because I Said I Would

Yesterday I got to do something really cool, I got to speak to 2,000 High Schoolers in Colorado Springs on behalf of Because I Said I Would. I met the 2 sweet girls below in November when they reached out and asked if they could get involved with our chapter in Denver even though they are in High School.... and OF COURSE they can. They heard our founder Alex Sheen speak at a DECA conference in Philly and it really resonated with them!
Over the past few months Matt and I have had the pleasure of getting to know these girls and they went to their principal and presented their idea to bring the heart of Because I Said I Would to their High School. They want all the student body to make and follow thru on promises which will better themselves, the school and the community!
They even made it happen where we had 15 minutes at the Winter Sports Assembly yesterday and they asked me to speak and show a video! I think everything went so well and we got a really positive response... I just wanted to live up to the girls expectations. I was just so proud of them. I planned my speech out during the week, practiced, memorized and made sure that it spoke to teenagers and resonated with them.
After yesterday it wasn't goodbye for me with this school or these girls, I am excited to continue the relationship and help foster their budding desire to volunteer!

I wanted to drop in a wish you all a Happy Valentine's Day friends! Maybe your day is just a regular normal day or maybe you have something special planned but either way I hope it's a great one!
I am finally getting together with my cute preggo friend Britt today for lunch, it will be so nice to catch up! Then I am getting a massage and NO it has nothing to do with Valentines day, who knew my lady would be open today! I need her to work on my neck to hopefully alleviate some of the pressure leading to my migraines and my back is super sore from yoga! Anyways enough about my day today!
BUT Matt and I are gonna go out to eat on Friday for a little belated Valentine's.... in fact we are going to Colorado Springs to eat at one of the current contestants on Bravo's Top Chef Brother Luck! YAY, super excited!!!

The Great Alone

Alaska, 1974.
Unpredictable. Unforgiving. Untamed.
For a family in crisis, the ultimate test of survival.
Ernt Allbright, a former POW, comes home from the Vietnam war a changed and volatile man. When he loses yet another job, he makes an impulsive decision: he will move his family north, to Alaska, where they will live off the grid in America’s last true frontier.
Thirteen-year-old Leni, a girl coming of age in a tumultuous time, caught in the riptide of her parents’ passionate, stormy relationship, dares to hope that a new land will lead to a better future for her family. She is desperate for a place to belong. Her mother, Cora, will do anything and go anywhere for the man she loves, even if it means following him into the unknown
At first, Alaska seems to be the answer to their prayers. In a wild, remote corner of the state, they find a fiercely independent community of strong men and even stronger women. The long, sunlit days and the generosity of the locals make up for the Allbrights’ lack of preparation and dwindling resources.
But as winter approaches and darkness descends on Alaska, Ernt’s fragile mental state deteriorates and the family begins to fracture. Soon the perils outside pale in comparison to threats from within. In their small cabin, covered in snow, blanketed in eighteen hours of night, Leni and her mother learn the terrible truth: they are on their own. In the wild, there is no one to save them but themselves.
In this unforgettable portrait of human frailty and resilience, Kristin Hannah reveals the indomitable character of the modern American pioneer and the spirit of a vanishing Alaska―a place of incomparable beauty and danger. The Great Alone is a daring, beautiful, stay-up-all-night story about love and loss, the fight for survival, and the wildness that lives in both man and nature

I love Kristin Hannah, there I said it. There has not been one book of hers I haven't loved and in fact she has written some of my favorites like The Winter Garden and Firefly Lane. I have been counting down the days until her newest book came out which was finally last week, YAY! And the day it came out I picked it up! This book is so vivid I felt as if I was in Alaska in 1974, I would really love to know how she researched so much of this book because it was so technical in many ways. This is a family drama that spans over 20 years of this family. It wasn't what I was expecting in many ways but I loved it. I read this book really fast because I just had to know what was going to happen next. Kristin Hannah has said that she has already sold the movie rights to this book and I can honestly see not just a Book to movie with this one but a truly Oscar caliber film. The actors will have to be very vulnerable and once that is translated to screen I can only imagine how much I will love it.
Since this is set in Alaska it is also the perfect Winter read, I highly recommend it!

I am a sucker for haunted house scary movies and even better if it is PG-13 because then I know the gore factor is limited which makes me a happy camper er.... movie goer! EVEN if I hadn't been to the actual Winchester house I would have wanted to see this movie BUT because Matt and I have been to this house and taken a tour made me super excited!
I look like a baby by the way, we went in 2008 to tour the Winchester house in San Jose on our way to Monterey, CA and I loved it! Sarah Winchester said this is the house spirits built and she had construction on the house 24/7 hence weird things like the staircase to nowhere.
The house is literally straight out of a scary movie and the fact that the real Sarah did think she was haunted by all the victims here Winchester rifles took just amps up the weird, and the house totally had a weird vibe when we took the tour.
I also love that not only has Ghost Hunters but my fav Ghost Adventures have all done shows here capturing proof that this home might actually be haunted. And if you know me then you know I am a believer and I believe this home has some connection to the other side for sure. If you are ever in San Jose you really should take a tour and the history of the home and the family is incredible as well. And there is a Winchester rifle museum on the property as well.
Back to the movie..... sadly this was a total renter. Not scary at all and a little on the silly side, it could  have been so much better heck it had great actors in it. It was a fun Sunday afternoon movie but what until this is at Redbox!

Altered Carbon

Oh My GOSH you guys, Altered Carbon!! I knew there was a lot of buzz around this new Netflix series which debuted on Friday so I was already excited but obsessed does not even cover how I feel about this show! Matt and I started this Friday night after dinner and finished the season yesterday before the Super Bowl! The show is very complex to explain... it is set in a dystopian San Fransisco much like a Blade Runner environment. In this version of our world your entire life, mind and conciousness is downloaded onto these things called Stacks inside your neck and therefor if you can afford to you can purchase new "sleeves" of yourself or other people and essentially live forever. Changing between these sleeves when you see fit. Throw in Joel Kinnaman who is the last of this ancient order from 250 years ago who is brought back to life to solve a murder. I know it sounds bizarre but it is SO RAD! Everything Netflix created in this world is enchanting and throw in a ton of violence and nudity and WHAM.... Altered Carbon. Needless to say this is an adults only show! Now you must like SciFi to enjoy this, it's heavy on the SciFi yet solving the puzzle that is this show will keep you obsessing! AND it doesn't hurt that Joel Kinnaman is easy on the eyes! wink wink
OK ok I will stop but please go start this series today and if it is too much violence and nudity for you, like say nude samurai fight scene then I warned you.
Check it out.........
