The Invention of Wings

Hetty “Handful” Grimke, an urban slave in early nineteenth century Charleston, yearns for life beyond the suffocating walls that enclose her within the wealthy Grimke household. The Grimke’s daughter, Sarah, has known from an early age she is meant to do something large in the world, but she is hemmed in by the limits imposed on women.
Kidd’s sweeping novel is set in motion on Sarah’s eleventh birthday, when she is given ownership of ten year old Handful, who is to be her handmaid. We follow their remarkable journeys over the next thirty five years, as both strive for a life of their own, dramatically shaping each other’s destinies and forming a complex relationship marked by guilt, defiance, estrangement and the uneasy ways of love

I have never been one to clamor for an "Oprah Book Club" read, they are usually just to dull for me (ya, I just said that)......until now. I just finished this book and I loved it, if I was sitting with my book club girls in Oklahoma I would insist they read it. Like I always say I love a novel that is set in History, I love that I can immerse myself into something new and actually expand my knowledge on such an important topic as slavery. This book is not one with a huge climax, twists or shocking escapades but this book is a true Novel..... this is the sweeping tale of the Grimke' women and everything they touch. This book spans 35 years of life that is actually based on true historical figures.
I loved that this book brought up so many moral questions inside myself....what would I have done? Would I have the courage to fight for something I believe in like these characters had? This book is also really sheds light on the little value women had in the past.
I loved this book and these characters became my family for 2 weeks.

WW Recap..

Hey Guys! I forgot to give you guys my WW recap from last week........ I lost 1.6 pounds! I have lost a total of 28 pounds in just a little over a year! In the last month I have lost the 5 pounds I gained at Christmas. This is probably the easiest weight I will loose all year.....just eating normal again and not having Christmas indulgences made this a rather easy 5 pounds!
So I am back and ready to loose 12 pounds this year!!!!!
How did you guys do? I made a new recipe on Sunday and it was SO yummy....this would be a perfect Super Bowl dinner if you ask me.......

Weight Watchers Cheesy Chili Mac - 7 points per serving!

Welcome Home....

A LOT has happened this past week and all decisions were made in a crazy way.... which seems to be our "M.O." Matt has been in San Diego all week which is a 3 hour time difference from me, that was challenging to say the least. Matt moves next weekend and has no place to live.....after looking into Corporate House/Extended Stays and being horrified by the prices we changed plans. We decided that IF we found something for US to rent for the next year why not let Matt move in and take as much stuff from the house as he can. All I can say is that God answered our prayers and I have faith that it is meant to be because I found our home for the next year! EEKK
I am so proud of myself...This week while working I found a place, researched the area, contacted the Real Estate agent, negotiated prices WHICH I got lowered, turned in our application and GOT APPROVED! The Agent I worked with was amazing and our home for the next year is in Stapleton a newer suburb of Denver! Here is the home......the owner is moving out this weekend......
I thought it would be fun to live more "urban" in a beautiful Townhouse that seems to have a huge sense of community AND very animal friendly! Finding a place for 3 dogs isn't easy so this was meant to be when the owner saw that as a plus! She wanted animals but NO kids! hahaha! Perfect
This is the patio/side yard..... Yes, it is large enough for a table, grill and whatnot plus there is enough space for the boys to use the restroom! No, this isn't a yard but it is a year. NOW...... this home is 1 block away from Denver's Central Park, 2 Dog parks and countless other areas for us to take the dogs in our new neighborhood!
Look....I will have a cute porch swing! And this place is 2 bedrooms/ 2 1/2 baths which was SOOO important to me to ensure that our families could come and stay anytime!
Now.... I want to introduce you to our new neighborhood! Stapleton...............

4,700 acres (7.5 square miles) of planned redevelopment

50+ tasty restaurants

100+ stores and shops

4 community pools

1 community garden

1 sledding hill

50,000-square-foot recreation center

I know it seems crazy to be signing a lease without actually seeing the place but we can't drop everything, fly to our new city and spend the time we would need! Don't worry though I have 2 friends who have been BEYOND helpful... my childhood friend Corie and my friend Marika (Marika Lorainne for you Okies who watched Channel 4) So I am very grateful for their advice and help! Thank You guys! I owe you dinner!

Now....... we have 1 week, while I am working full time to pack for Matt to move! We have to provide him with enough kitchen/bath/living stuff for him to live alone for a few months. I might be kinda stressed! (maybe) Then after I kick Matt out (ha) I HAVE to re-carpet our entire home before I put it on the market! *sigh*

Happy Weekend Friends!

For Christmas I was lucky enough to win my Brother-in-laws gift during Dirty Santa which was Seasons 1 & 2 of Homeland! (Thanks Landon) I have always heard so much about this series and I really wanted to watch I was pretty stoked! And....since we got home from Christmas we have watched Seasons 1, 2 and started Season 3!!! We are beyond hooked! It is a bit like Zero Dark Thirty meets Politics meets complex family drama and what you have will be Homeland! Matt and I just both really love this show and we hope to finish Season 3 before he moves to Denver! If you have Showtime then all the episodes are OnDemand...... you should watch them!!!!
Here is the trailer for Season 1.....

"Go West, Young Man"....

The Savage's are headed West, 1,255.3 Miles to be exact to....
It's TRUE, Matt and I are moving to Denver, Colorado!
Who? What? Where? Why??? I know I know, here are the details.....

The night before we headed to Oklahoma for Christmas Matt said “What do you think of Denver”…..I was like….uh? What? And he explained to me that a Farmers District is open in Denver and looking for a District Manager. He had been contacted regarding this opening and would like to interview, which he did last week. And not even 1 month later..... it is happening!
Matt was offered the position just this past Wednesday and Thursday the contract was signed!

I am sure you all have a ton of questions and I understand my head is still spinning! But here is what we know as of now....

* Matt will be moving 2 weeks from TODAY! eeek! And this coming week Matt will be in San Diego at a Farmers District Manager summit. So we are pounding pavement via the internet looking for Matt a furnished extended stay/corporate housing in Denver for the next few months.

* I will be staying here in Ohio, continuing to work while I wrap up our lives here. Ah yes, the house! I will be doing my best to sell by owner again and if after a month or so that isn't working we will get a realtor.

* Once we wrap everything up, sell the home and find a place to live in Denver.... we will make the 20+ hour drive from Columbus to Denver.

This decision was made based with all of this in mind:

* On the fact that in Denver Matt will not be traveling, we can have a life together again. We will actually eat dinner together...who would of thunk it?

* We will be closer to Oklahoma, only a easy 1 hour flight away from family! Plus a HUGE decrease in ticket prices.

* This position as a Denver District Manager is a good one and we can see a bright future ahead.

* And oh ya, this city just so happens to be the home of one of our favorite teams......

Yes, we are sad to leave Columbus.....we thought this was forever and we grew to love this city. So in a way for me especially this is closing a chapter in our lives and that does come with a ton of emotion. And no, this transition will not be will be filled with challenges that I am sure of, BUT a girlfriend told me yesterday.... "Eye on the Prize" and she is right!

Lastly I want to say how proud I am of Matt and everything he accomplishes professionally. Sometimes we don't see our husbands persona outside of the house as much as we should. Matt is an incredibly smart and a highly respected professional within Farmers Insurance and I beam with pride.
GO BRONCOS today is a HUGE day... We are in it to win it!!!! Beat the Pats!!!!

We want to say THANK YOU to all our friends and family who love and support us! Thank you to my blog readers who I share this crazy life of mine with. And buckle up, we are all in for the ride!

BUT!! I will say Matt and I are going to dinner at a nice steakhouse tonight and I will NOT be counting my goal this coming week is to at least stay the same!

The Lone Survivor

I read this book back in 2009 when a great friend from Book Club introduced it to us all. In 2009 I gave RAVE reviews for this book and I tried pushing it on everyone I knew. The easiest way to tell you what it is about is to show you the recent movie trailer......

When the trailer for this movie came out about 5 months ago it gave me chills...... and after watching the movie this past weekend it too gave me chills. This is the true story of Operation Redwing as told by Marcus Luttrell, the survivor. This book was very in depth and there is no way this movie could cover every little thing so lets get that out of the way for those of you who have also read the book. NOW>.... the movie was amazing. This movie gives you such an emotional connection to the Seals which made the entire story line pack that much more punch. The actors? Incredible..... really. I thought they truly showed what these guys went thru. Their agony was real, they made everyone believe it. I knew what I was getting into, this is violent, harsh, emotional and amazing.....but just know that before you watch. Also there were a ton of parents with little kids....this is NOT a little kid movie.....between the rough-true-to-life guy talk it is very bloody.
GOOO see this!

I Love a Good Vest!

I have a thing for vests.....not the 1985 vests that my mother made me wear growing up BUT the chic puffer vest, name it kind! SO I thought I would share with you some of my recent favorites all from different stores and all different price points!!!
* J Crew, oh JCrew how I love thee and how I love your "Excursion Vests". I have this vest in Navy stripes as well as black houndstooth from last year! And lucky you.... this week this camo style is 40% off! You can check it out HERE!
 * I came across this vest today on the Anthropologie website and isn't this cute? This would be great dressed down or even dressed up!!! Buy this one HERE!
 * I am loving faux-fur this year and yes, this can be worn until it is officially "Spring"....and I don't own this but it is very tempting! It is not only on sale for $20 but it is H&M too!! Check it out HERE!
* Lastly I am in love with this polka dot puffer from Lands End. You heard, I never have shopped there but I just might start with this vest! This also comes in Purple polka dot which would be great for the cold days in Spring! It's on sale too!!! YAY.... see it HERE!

You can do so much with vests....throw it on over a dress with cute boots, pair it with a striped shirt and tennis or any of these would look awesome over a blue jean button down!!!
Cheers to Vest weather!

Doctors Listen Up,

Dear Neurologist-of-mine,

I am going to have to fire you. The first time I thought it was your "style" and you didn't know me well.  The second time you cleared Botox thru my insurance so that gave you a point or two (more on that later). This last time was the last time.

I took 2 hours off of work, then I worked thru lunch for 2 days for what? NOTHING. After waiting around for you for a total of 1 hour I was hoping we could talk for more than 12minutes. But I get that my "migraines" are chump change to you when you have surgery to attend but they are most certainly not that to me. I came to you with problems regarding my new insurance company, my meds always require extended authorization via YOU. I came to you to talk about how the generic doesn't work for me like the "actual brand" does. I came to tell you that the daily med you have me on is not helping. I then told you how I am at the end of my rope.

Now here is the good part...... you stared at me while I talked, interrupting me to say things that I just said.... fun! You have to leave the room twice and then this "migraine survey" you had me fill out you did not even glance at it, just stuck it in my file. IF you had read it you would know that I answered that my life revolves around my migraines, it causes me to miss out on things, that my pain level is maxed out.....but you didn't read it. Then at like exactly 12 minutes you told me this.....

* Stop taking my daily meds, nothing works for me (great thanks, informative)
* Asked if I take vitamins for the millionth time (I Do)
* Told me to buy a new herbal supplement and when I asked if it would make me nauseated you replied "maybe, most things seem to make you feel that way" (thanks for that)
* Then you told me you were CUTTING BACK my most important med I get, the ONLY thing that helps from 18 pills a month to 9!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I could use 9 in a week.

Lastly, the Botox treatment that you cleared thru my old insurance....I even asked you face to face "I will only have to pay a co-pay right" you said YES! Well....... for those lovely 21 shots in my head that cost over $3,000...... you BILLED ME for $1200. Yup, not paying that. It didn't even work.

So thank you for not listening to me saying I am miserable, Thank you for then taking away medicine that helps and thank you for pushing me out the door in 12 minutes.

Losing it in the New Year!

Yup, looks who is back on track!!!! This exact week last year is when I started Weight Watchers and I did not have a particular goal set......I just wanted to loose weight without a number looming over my head. Something I am most proud of is that from Jan-Nov I never gained....I only lost. Last year I lost a total of 28 pounds! I started at 176 and a week before Christmas I weighed in at 148! I was proud of myself. Now, I will be honest during the Holidays and being at home for Christmas.....I did not think about WW once! And I was ok with that, I wanted to just enjoy! So a week ago I weighed in at 153, I had gained 5 pounds give or take during the Holidays and that is what I expected!
Last Monday I recommitted to WW and I lost 2 pounds last week!! As of this past Friday I weighed in at 151.2 !
This year I do actually have a goal....... I would first like to loose the other 3 pounds I gained and then I would like to loose just 10! My Goal is to be 138! We shall see huh?? I will start doing these posts again, hopefully posting my recipes and all that like I use to! We need each other.....Is anyone else back on to loose??? Anyone doing WW???

I do have 1 tidbit for you.......SO I don't love the frozen meals I eat at lunch but I tolerate them....a means to an end! BUT....this week I found one I LOVED! I know right? This meal is really good and really filling!!!
