Yippee

Guess what?? As you read this me and this group of hoodlums above are having a wonderful brunch together and we are kicking off a wonderful long weekend! I am so excited to have my family here this weekend.....I haven't seen Marissa since March, Mom since April and Dad since Christmas. Even as I type that I can not believe it.....I went from seeing them at LEAST once a week to this, it is very hard. I literally have a hard time wrapping my head around the fact I have not seen my Dad in 9 months, it is very emotional to type that!! But we are in for a fun, relaxing weekend filled with Love and good food!
Next week I have a busy week at work but next weekend I will get all the blog posts up about their stay!
TGIF friends!

Dad....

Today is a VERY exciting day......Mom, Dad and Marissa will be on their way tomorrow to come spend Labor Day weekend with us! It is also extra special because today ismy Dad's 60th Birthday. (Sorry for the age reveal Dad) Isn't it weird how we don't see age when we see our parents? Dad is Dad and to think that he actually ages is absurd! ha! Matt and I are SOO excited that for Dad's Birthday present we are crossing off one of his top 5 "Bucket List" desires! We are taking a day trip Saturday to Dayton, Ohio to visit the National Museum of the US Air Force. My Dad is a private pilot and many of my memories are flying with Dad in his plane to visit fun places in Oklahoma. So being able to share in this experience with Dad fills my heart with so much joy.
Isn't it funny how Dad's are the tough ones, the person in your life who should know how to do everything and even be able to guide you thru anything via the phone? I talk to my Mom every.single.day and in a way I always feel like I am talking to Dad too since I know everything they are doing......BUT......it isn't the same. I need to remember to call Dad more, just Dad. I miss him just as much as Mom and I hope he always knows that.
Being 18 hours away gives me a lot to miss back home. I miss.......... Thunder Games with Dad, the Thunder is a love we all share and to me it is the essence of the 4 of us above. I miss running to the car in 30' temperatures because we didn't want to carry our coat into the game, I miss screaming until we can't anymore and I miss seeing the joy of the game on my Dads face! NOW......true, we can always go to a game when we visit the family in Oklahoma but I miss the weekly games and dinners shared with my Mom and Dad. I may not say it enough but I love my Dad and I hope he has the happiest of Birthdays!

Working It Wednesday

Hello fellow "cheap-a-nistas"...I think I just created a word! Word! Last week at work I was a walking bargain thru the halls at work and I am going to share with you my 2 favorite looks!!!
The Black and White shirt above is from Target, it's Merona my favorite! Guess What? It is on sale for $10 online! I actually got it in store for $4.02, I know.....please be jelly!! This comes in print and solids....and this is the perfect layering shirt for work or weekend! I topped my $4 deal with a statement necklace (Coldwater Creek, yup really) and WHAM we have a easy, cheap work outfit! You can see this shirt at Target HERE!
This outfit above reminded me of "Back to School" I felt like a pencil all day but I LOVED it! My shoes are Target 7 YEARS AGO! Can you believe it? True story. My dress has 3/4 sleeves and is Forever 21, plus size. Isn't it crazy that to find a XL in F21 which is probably a L everywhere else I have to buy in the Plus Size section? Hey, it's ok because they have the cutest dresses you can see HERE! No shame here!
Get excited!!! Leopard is always in style for me but this year it is everywhere! And get these while they are HOT (I did) these are on sale at Target for $9.98, yes that is right! What will I wear them with? This fall I will wear them with ankle jeans and any fall top or sweater. For work I think I will wear them with black ankle length dress pants and any top for a edgy/hip look! Get these HERE!

The Butler

This weekend Matt and I finally got to see The Butler, we have been excited about this movie since we first saw the preview! Last weekend we watched a special on OWN about the film and the actors who played such important characters... it really pushed us into forming emotional attachments with this movie long before we bought our movie ticket. This is based on a true story of Eugene Allen the real White House Butler who served 8 Presidents. You can learn more about the true inspiring story HERE!
I am trying my best to accurately describe this film for you........it is a must see. It is not because you will be "On your toes" not because it "was filled with action" but because this is a epic story..... weaved into real history that spanned over 90 years. Forest Whitaker is memorizing, both Matt and I thought that he gave this character so much life that it is honestly hard to describe but you will really see how life was thru Cecil Gaine's eyes. I spoke about how the movie 42 based on Jackie Robinson is a true teaching film whether it is 100% fact or not, the film will open your eyes just as this film will do also! (You can read the 42 review HERE!)

Has anyone else seen this movie? Did you feel like it was as special as I did?

Sizzlin Summer Slim Down

Ok, first up I have to apologize because ALL summer I have been "loosing" weight NOT "losing weight". I am officially an idiot, this made me laugh....I am sure everyone has been like say what? I think fast, type fast and I am a poor poor proof-reader. Odd, that I run a blog...huh? Anyhoo....my bad!

Friends can you believe the time has come.........not only is Labor Day next weekend but the end of Summer is arriving. This means the end of wearing white and the end of the Sizzlin Summer Slim Down. I will be honest I do not think I did as well as I could have but I also started a new job which threw me off my focus for a bit. (Such an excuse I know)! Now, I know I know......we all have this week and we are ALL going to end strong!
Let me say that this isn't the end........my family is coming THIS Thursday (YAY) and they leave next Monday and I am just putting this out there.......we are going to eat good and so am I! I realize I might gain 2 pounds or so but I am going to enjoy this Labor Day weekend and re-commit on Tuesday!
I started this challenge at the beginning of Summer at 158 and yes, we have this week....but as of this past Friday I am 152.8....SOO I lost a little over 6 pounds this summer which puts me at 23.2 total lost!
How did you do? Anything is a win in my eyes and should be in yours too! 1 pound, 4 pounds......anything is an accomplishment and I applaud you!

Whats next? I think I am going to start a new series that a friend has inspired me to create......
Back to Basics
I am going to start at the beginning when I first started cooking, I am also going to incorporate WW values and I hope to show you anyone can cook! I was once a beginner and everyone has to start somewhere, those recipes I started with are still in my rotation today!
I will do basics, try to post videos, answer questions and I will give out my favorite recipes for beginners. I am just a home cook with a passion for food and I do live my life "One Meal at a Time'......

Migraine-be-Gone.....

This week I had my first appointment with my new Neurologist here in Columbus and he seemed to be assertive and he has a plan for me which is good! It's always hard meeting a new doctor and trying to fill them in on the past 12 years of my migraine history!
First up, is a some new dietary restrictions and it's a lot! BUT.....not everything is a trigger for me so we will work thru this and take it week by week!
Second, we are "tapering" me off an old preventative medicine and starting a new one.....so Matt helped me out by 1/4-ing all my old and new pills! I have taken them for 2 nights and since the meds are over-lapping currently I feel very foggy but that should clear up once the transition is over! Wish me luck!
Lastly, I have chronic migraines and he does think Botox would be something to try....so his office has started the petition with my insurance company to get this covered! It could take anywhere from 1 month to 6 months! So we shall see when that will be!
Maybe this will be the "trick"?! Who knows!

The Never List...

The most relentless, deeply disturbing thriller writer since Jeffery Deaver and Gillian Flynn

For years, best friends Sarah and Jennifer kept what they called the “Never List”: a list of actions to be avoided, for safety’s sake, at all costs. But one night, against their best instincts, they accept a cab ride with grave, everlasting consequences. For the next three years, they are held captive with two other girls in a dungeon-like cellar by a connoisseur of sadism.

Ten years later, at thirty-one, Sarah is still struggling to resume a normal life, living as a virtual recluse under a new name, unable to come to grips with the fact that Jennifer didn’t make it out of that cellar. Now, her abductor is up for parole and Sarah can no longer ignore the twisted letters he sends from jail.......
I have been so lucky this Summer to have read some amazing books, books I have been so excited to share and push on you all (HA) and this one was the cherry on top!!! This was a thriller and this book was a different read, but change is good.  For me, I think honestly with the awful story of the girls in Cleveland who were held against their will....this book stood out that much more to me! This book grabbed from the first paragraph and I could not wait to see what would happen. This book explores what the girls lives are after being rescued and the author does a wonderful job giving each girl a different reaction and a different story that needs to be told. I will say this took a turn I didn't expect but it made it just that much better! You guys gotta read this!!!!!!!!!!

Slimspiration

Hi Guys! Happy Monday! I am so excited to share with you all another wonderful weight loss story that inspires me! I am personally in a rut with my WW, weight loss and all of it.....so this story and hearing Sarah's story comes at the perfect time for me!
Any comments you leave I will 100% before to pass on to Sarah! Enjoy friends!
This is Sarah's "Before" Picture...........
Hi everyone in the blogosphere my name is Sarah Ledgerwood. Nicole asked me to share my weight loss journey with you all so here is my story. Much like Nicole I grew up in the OKC Metro area and I moved to Tampa, FL about 5 years ago. I knew no one when I moved here except my now fiancĂ© and his buddies. I had never been “domestic” before and I ate with my parents, ate out, or ate frozen dinners when I lived in OKC. Cooking was of no interest to me other than mac and cheese, ramen, etc. When I moved here I knew I needed to learn to cook so I started teaching myself with Paula Deen, Pioneer Woman, and any other celeb chef recipes I could find that sounded and looked good. We all know Paula likes her butter and mayo, those recipes combined with my unawareness of portion control, along with depression caused by homesickness and adjusting to life in Tampa led to weight gain of 60 + lbs. In the Summer of 2010 we went with our friends to the Florida Keys on vacation. After seeing pictures from that trip I knew I had to make a change. My former roommate/best friend had been very successful at Weight Watchers so I made the decision to join and have never looked back. The week I joined Weight Watchers I was at my highest weight ever at 231.8 lbs. When I joined I decided I was going to give it my all and do my best, I made up my mind that failure was not an option for me. I discovered early on that I am an emotional eater and that I was eating WAY more food than I should be each meal. Weight Watchers taught me how to control my portions, make smart food choices, and turn to other activities to channel my emotions instead of through eating. I started WW in August of 2010 and in May of 2012 I received my Lifetime Membership after losing 70 lbs. I have maintained that weight loss for a year and three months now. Maintaining the loss has not been hard because WW became my lifestyle over time, not a diet. Because you only lose small amounts of weight weekly the “program” becomes a routine and a part of your life over time. Another motivation for me to keep my weight loss off is I added up the cost I spent to lose my weight and I DO NOT want to waste that money and have to pay WW again, once you get your Lifetime membership you get E-Tools and monthly membership free as long as you stay within 2 lbs of your goal weight…………it sounds scary at first but they equip you with the tools to do this. In June of this year I became an employee of WW because I wanted to encourage and help others during their weight loss journey as I had been helped and encouraged along the way.

Nicole asked me to share a favorite recipe, that’s hard because I have not met a recipe off of the Skinnytaste website that I did not like. I enjoy taking favorite recipes and making them more WW friendly by swapping out ingredients like instead of oil use greek yogurt, instead of 2% milk use fat free, instead of heavy whipping cream use fat free half and half or fat free evaporated milk. It is like a game to me now, how low can I get the points values for a favorite dish and have a good size portion. The recipe builder on WW E-Tools is a lifesaver.

Everyone needs to find what works best for them as far as their weight loss journey. If you are doing WW my best advice, TRACK! Plan ahead, I plan my meals for the entire week on the weekend before so there are no surprises. Believe in yourself, don’t give up, and don’t look back. If you lose weight and your clothes get too big, donate them, do not hold onto them as your “fat” clothes that you can save just in case you need them again in the future. Liberate yourself of them, it is a great feeling, trust me. Find someone to be your cheerleader along the way, my fiancĂ© was mine and when I hit my goal weight I made him go to my meeting with me to celebrate because he helped get me there also, I didn’t do it on my own. Most importantly celebrate any weight loss, 0.2 is still a loss to be celebrated, also don’t beat yourself up if you have a gain; just resolve to do better the next week. Try to have fun with it, do not look at it as a diet, look at it as a lifestyle change and over time it will become a routine for you.

Although I do not have an awesome blog like Nicole’s and I don’t have a Facebook page I do have an email address and will do my best to answer any questions, I am here to help any and all on their weight loss journeys. My email is Ledge217@aol.com

Popcorn!

Is a movie still a movie without popcorn? For us it seems to be popcorn and some sort of sour gummy! I usually eat my portion of the popcorn first before Matt ruins it will "Nacho cheese flavoring" bleh! This past weekend I wasn't feeling well from migraines AGAIN (whats new?) so we rented a movie on Friday night and went to see a matinee Saturday! Thats the great thing about movies, for the most part they are relaxing! The movies? Completely opposite! ha
We saw Elysium with Matt Damon and this was a movie we have been looking forward to for awhile now since we first saw the trailer. We love us some action and throw in some Sci-fi twists and you have "Total Recall meets Terminator" or Elysium! Matt Damon was great, I almost forgot how likable he is and oddly perfect for this role. This is set in 2145 and I loved the premise of the powerful and rich fleeing Earth to a fancy-sort-of-space-station! This was intriguing, action packed and had us on our toes the whole time! Super fun movie!
We also rented The Place Beyond the Pines which I remember getting a lot of "accolades" from movie peeps. Hmm.....This movie was good, it really made you think and this movie came full circle. The theme is Dads and Sons.....how differently you can turn out and who you become based on your own Dad. It basically had 3 acts and was almost 3 hours long, just when you thought it was over another act started. You do not even meet Bradley Coopers character until the 2nd act about 1 hour 15 minutes in. The acting was all very good, just like Ryan Goslings abs! haha! But this didn't have much of a climax for me, this was a drama that told a story. Plain and Simple....I say rent it for sure but we are glad we didn't see it in the theater.
Have you guys seen either of these???

Working It Wednesday....

We have been so lucky here in Ohio to truly be getting some amazing Fall-Like weather, which is my favorite time of year! And with the weather being so nice it has made me get even more excited about fall, I may have or have not started a count down! Sissie.....

Sometimes when writing my blog or just anything, we tend to forget to give credit to the people closest to us. Like that saying we hurt the ones we love....ONLY....exactly opposite of that! So, I have to do a little bragging on this person named Matt that I live with! HA! (I am actually laughing out loud). Well....my parents are coming Labor Day weekend (EEK) and I can.barely.wait. But anyone who has visited me knows how expensive flights are to Columbus it is insane. Marissa was sad she wasn't going to be able to come this time.........then, Matt went and did something wonderful for my family..... He used HIS very own SW miles he earned while traveling for work and he booked a flight for Marissa! Just knowing how happy that made my parents and the fact that this was 110% all his idea...is pretty special! And I love him for it. We are going to be celebrating Dad's BIG Birthday (you can guess) and I am so excited Marissa gets to come too! And even though this is 3 weeks away you know I have already been creating my "Flow Chart of Fun"!! When someone comes here they are our guest.....we cook, clean, plan, travel and do all to make our family feel special! Who knew I would love being a hostess os much?? I can't wait!

Sizzlin Summer Slim Down....

Hi Friends!!! ok....I want to jump right in and confess that I did not loose anything this week. So for the past few weeks I have stayed the same right at 155. I know exactly why that is too......I haven't tried really hard. I have been plagued with migraines and honestly WW or loosing weight has been the last thing on my mind. BUT, I am in no way jumping ship...trust me! I still want to loose at LEAST 10-15 more pounds! I fully intend on committing myself again real soon, I miss the weeks I know have been right on and then standing on that scale to see some lost is a great feeling. But I also wanted to be honest with you all that life happens, it happens to all of us! This week let's all try to have a salad AND/OR veggie with every meal!

I want to share with you a meal I made last week for Matt and I and it was very good!!!
Skinny Taste Naked Turkey Bruschetta Burgers! You can find the recipe HERE or below.....

Naked Turkey Bruschetta Burgers
Skinnytaste.com
Servings: 5  • Size: 1 burger  • Old Points: 6 pts • Weight Watcher Points+: 7 pt
Calories: 288 • Fat: 14 g • Carb: 10 g • Fiber: 2 g • Protein: 27 g • Sugar: 0 g
Sodium: 169 mg (without the salt) • Cholest: 10 mg
Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup chopped red onion
  • 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar
  • kosher salt and fresh cracked pepper to taste
  • 3 medium vine ripe tomatoes
  • 2 small cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp fresh basil leaves, chopped
  • 3 oz part skim mozzarella, diced
For the turkey zucchini burgers:
  • 1.25 lbs 93% lean ground turkey
  • 1 small zucchini, grated (1 cup, or 5 oz)
  • 1/4 cup seasoned whole wheat breadcrumbs
  • 1 clove garlic, grated
  • 1 tbsp red onion, grated
  • salt and fresh pepper
  • oil spray
Combine the red onion, olive oil, balsamic, salt and pepper in a large bowl. Set aside a few minutes while you chop the tomatoes, then place in the bowl. Add the garlic, basil and additional salt and pepper, to taste and mix well and set aside. Toss in the cheese when ready to serve.

Squeeze the excess moisture from the zucchini in a paper towel. In a large bowl, combine the ground turkey, shredded zucchini, breadcrumbs, garlic, onion, salt and pepper. Form into 5 equal sized patties about 5 oz each, forming them as flat as possible.

Heat a large skillet on medium-high heat. When hot, lightly spray with oil. Add the burgers to the pan and reduce the heat to medium-low. Cook until browned, about 4 minutes, then flip and cook another 4 minutes, careful not to burn.
To serve, arrange 3 slices of tomatoes on each dish, then place 1 cup arugula on top in the center, then top with the burger and finish with the bruschetta (don't forget to add the cheese), serve right away.
